Upgrade for dog facilities

IT might not look like much now, but the redeveloped Military Working Dog Training Flight (MWDTF) at RAAF Base Amberley’s Security and Fire School promises to be one of the best facilities of its type in the ADF.

Phase one began early this month and will include the construction of a new breeding facility, new kennels and training areas for the base’s canines.

The Officer in Charge of the Military Working Dog Training Flight, Flight Lieutenant Tony Buffett, said the facilities being constructed would enable MWD training to be met through an “in-house” breeding program and selective recruitment of canines.

“The upgrade means a lot more canines can be held for training purposes and will allow us to monitor the in-house pups’ environmental exposure,” FLTLT Buffett said.

“When the facility is completely refurbished it will be one of the best canine facilities in the southern hemisphere.”

The second phase of the redevelopment will involve the refurbishment of the current kennel banks and existing administration building.
