Cadets take to skies

WHILE most teenagers are content to learn how to drive a car, 29 Australian Defence Force cadets set their sights on the skies at Camden in Sydney’s southwest.

The Australian Air Force, Army and Navy cadets participated in the tri-service Basic Introductory Flying Training Course at the Air Force Cadet facility at Camden Airport late last year.

It was the first time the course had been conducted in New South Wales for cadets from all three services.

The cadets received theoretical and practical training in groundwork, safety and flying. However, for most cadets, the highlight of the four-day course was the three-hour flying component.

Flying P-38 Piper Tomahawk and P-28 Piper Warrior single-engine aircraft, these valuable hours of instruction in the air counted towards the award of a private pilot’s licence.
