A real achiever

FLIGHT Lieutenant Ben Marshman was a logical choice as the winner of the 2002 Young Achiever of the Year Award at the Australian National Logistics and Supply Chain Awards night in Sydney.

Open to anyone working in the logistics field across the public and private sectors, the awards are traditionally dominated by corporate Australia and its employees.

FLTLT Marshman beat five nominees from the corporate world to win the Young Achiever award – the only individual prize awarded on the night.

For the past two years, FLTLT Marshman has been based at the Headquarters of No. 1 Joint Movement Group in Sydney.

His former Commanding Officer, Group Captain Andrew Kilgour, nominated him for the award on the basis of his efforts in managing movement for Operation Slipper, his academic achievements, and his role on the Committee of the Logistics Association of Australia.

As well as managing a hefty workload at 1JMOVGP, FLTLT Marshman is just one year shy of completing a Masters of Business in Logistics Management.

He said it was “very nice” to receive the award, especially given the high standard of nominees.

“It’s wonderful to receive recognition within the broader logistics industry,” FLTLT Marshman said.
Seven of his 11 years in the Air Force have been spent in the logistics field.

Before moving to 1JMOVGP, he worked with RAAF Base Townsville’s No. 1 Combat Logistics Squadron, getting an opportunity to deploy to East Timor.

At 1JMOVGP, FLTLT Marshman has continued to rack up the frequent flier miles, venturing to Papua New Guinea and Canada during his time in the position.

“I thought this position would be a bit quieter [than 1CLS] but it has proven to be both demanding and satisfying,” he said.
