RAAF Base Tindal has conducted a mini CRASHEX to exercise the base Airfield Emergency Plan.

The CRASHEX, the first for some time at the base, was held in late November.

It simulated an incident where a fighter aircraft had a fire in the cockpit requiring ejection by both occupants.

This scenario required the base emergency personnel to respond to three different sites around the airfield – they were the sites of the two ejected personnel and the crashed aircraft.

Communications, one of the areas that is always critical in these events, were tested to the limits.

The Fire, Medical, SECPOL and Land Rescue Team who had to locate, treat, and transport injured personnel and secure damaged aircraft responded well even though the depth of response was minimised.

The Base Command Post was also activated and exercised in its ability to manage the situation.

Although highlighting some areas for improvement, the exercise was considered to be a success in that base personnel had a good opportunity to use their skills and the plan was proven to be effective.
