Going head to head in the big league

IN a first for rugby league in the Australian Defence Force, teams representing their respective service will go head-to-head at the 2003 National Inter-Service Rugby League Titles in Canberra from February 17-21.

Games will be played under lights at the former home ground of the Canberra Raiders, Seiffert Oval in Queanbeyan, with Navy and Air Force kicking off proceedings at 7pm on Monday, February 17.

Air Force and Army will then take to the field at 7pm on February 19, followed by Army and Navy at 5pm on February 21.

The first ever national ADF rugby league champion team will be crowned following the final match, where a Combined Australian Services Rugby League (CASRL) team will also be named.

The CASRL team then has matches scheduled the following week.

The first is against champion Canberra district competition team, the Queanbeyan Blues at Seiffert Oval on Sunday, February 23 from 7pm.

On February 24, the Australian Services side will have a training session with the Canberra Raiders at Bruce Stadium (time to be confirmed).

Commitments conclude on February 25 with the final game against the American Tomahawks, also at Bruce Stadium from 6pm.

Organisers are also extending an open invitation to all interested people to come and see any of the matches – free of charge.

“Going on the form displayed at last year’s combined service titles, there will definitely be some first class action worth watching,” tournament organiser Guy Randell said.
