Airfield Engineering Plant Operator Aircraftman Damian Goad briefs an inspection party on a civil construction equipment display at RAAF Base Townsville.

THE Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal (DFRT) late last year recognised the Airfield Engineering (AFENG) Trade Groups’ new career structure.

The determination, which commenced on November 21, acknowledged the establishment of a new Plant Operator mustering, as well as a new career structure for all AFENG Trade Groups which included Carpenter, Electrician, Plant Operator, Plumber and Works Supervisor musterings.

The Plant Operator mustering will be eligible for Pay Group 1 through to Pay Group 4, while the Carpenter, Electrician and Plumber musterings will be eligible for Pay Group 3 through to Pay Group 4.

Employees in each of the four trades have the opportunity to progress to Works Supervisor where, under the new structure, they will be paid up to Pay Group 5.

The AFENG Trade Groups’ new career structure will enable AFENG to provide a competent work force in support of the AFENG capability.

The new sustainable structure will focus on the capability that AFENG provides within the Air Force and will revisit key human resource management areas, including recruiting, job design, training and development, competency based training and assessment, career planning and performance reporting.

Since 1999, the Airfield Engineering Trade Groups have completed a wide range of training and development activities, exercises, operations and construction projects focused on providing appropriate infrastructure for the conduct and sustainment of effective air operations.

This has enabled the AFENG Trade Groups to perform their role of providing, protecting and regenerating air bases, including airfield infrastructure, passive defence measures, physical security and support for the active defence of the air base.

During a visit to RAAF Base Townsville last November, the DFRT was provided with direct evidence of AFENG tasks that were performed in support of air operations.

The inspection visit included formal presentations, workshop and field displays designed to demonstrate the importance of the AFENG Trade Groups.
