Kit for special needs families

Defence families with special needs will be given a helping hand with a new information kit.

Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence Danna Vale launched an information, a program of the Defence Special Needs Support Group (DSNSG), at RAAF Base Williamtown.

Mrs Vale, DSNSG patron, said fact sheets provided information for families either about to be posted or who had just arrived in an area about the type of services available, eligibility and how to access special services.

“They also contain information on local support groups and other organisations that may assist families to settle into their new environment,” she said.

“The sheets cover topics such as early intervention, gifted and talented children, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, learning difficulties, respite, school services and equipment.”

She said the DSNSG, which was formed in 1994 by a group of Defence families, was an example of how the larger Defence community worked together to assist members and their families.

The first for an Air Force Base, the Williamtown fact sheets were produced with the assistance of the Port Stephens and RAAF Base Williamtown Support Group.
