Vatican honours chaplain

Chaplain Peter O’Keefe
A TITLE of honour and authority recently bestowed on Chaplain (Air Commodore) Peter O’Keefe has come from a high level – the Vatican.

Chaplain O’Keefe, the Air Force’s most senior Catholic chaplain, has been notified through the office of Pope John Paul II that he has been appointed a Prelate of Honour with the title Monsignor.

In Chaplain O’Keefe’s case the title recognises the unique contributions and responsibilities involved with the wellbeing, organisation and pastoral care given to Air Force personnel and their families.

In his role as Principal Air Chaplain, he is responsible for the organisation, conduct and functioning of the Air Force Chaplain Branch.

With more than 20 years in the Air Force and 31 years experience as a priest, he is overwhelmed by the positive reaction and well wishes following his appointment.

“In many ways while I am grateful for my role within the Air Force and the Church, I’m trying to play down the various titles and keep my feet on the ground,” Chaplain O’Keefe said.

“I feel a sense of achievement and satisfaction by this appointment and it serves to remind me of the responsibilities and expectations others have of me.”

He aims to continue to serve to the best of his ability in providing leadership, service and pastoral care to his fellow chaplains and the “Air Force family”.
