A FAST
and aggressive Army outfit brushed aside Air Force on its way to
winning the 2002 ADF National Interservice Soccer titles held at
Randwick Barracks from November 11-15.
Army secured the title after being the only side to win a game at
the nationals, thrashing Air Force 4-0 and holding Navy to a scoreless
draw.
Air Force coach Corporal Garry Baverstock said his side stuck in
there until the end and was hampered by a hard, dry field and poor
ground markings.
I thought the boys gave 150 per cent and throughout the first
half we were the better side. We had a few chances but just didnt
put them away, he said.
The most disappointing thing is the boys have to work hard
for two weeks solid for these national titles and we cant
get proper officials or ground markings, so it makes it very hard.
You can barely see the lines.
CPL Baverstock said Leading Aircraftman Mick Krollig from South
Australia was outstanding in a team effort.
Air Forces women soccer players, meantime, competed in a combined
side with Army, which was defeated by Navy in two thrilling games.
Called the RAARMYs, the side had players come together
from various units just to play the game and then return.
For a team that was put together half an hour before the game,
it was very good, WO2 Lister said, wearing his womens
coach hat.
The RAARMYs lost the first game 2-1 and then held a 1-0 lead at
full-time of the second game.
However, an ADF champion side could not be determined as each side
had one win apiece and both teams had scored two goals.
Therefore the second game went into extra time to determine the
national champion, with Navy scoring the golden goal after an extra
eight minutes.
To go down with a golden goal is just the way the game goes,
but were very happy with the result, WO2 Lister said.
