Edinburgh upgrade

Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Angus Houston inspects the redevelopment with construction manager Kevin Anderson.

STAGE 1 of RAAF Base Edinburgh’s $45 million redevelopment program is well under way and will serve to upgrade World War II-era facilities in use on the base.

The extensive work is part of a two-stage program which includes new office and laboratory space for the Aircraft Research and Development Unit and new facilities for Maritime Patrol Group, No. 92 Wing Logistics Operations and No. 1 Airfield Defence Section Rifle Flight.

For some of the units involved in the redevelopment program this means a relocation closer to their respective flight line hangars, which is seen as a practical step in an operational environment.

Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Angus Houston paid a visit to the base recently and was given a tour of the Redevelopment Stage 1 sites by Base Commander Rick Subotkiewicz and Commander of Maritime Patrol Group Air Commodore Philip Byrne.

“The Edinburgh redevelopment is long overdue and much needed,” AIRCDRE Byrne said. “These changes will vastly improve the effectiveness of operations at the affected Edinburgh units and improve unit morale tremendously.”

Stage 1 will also include improvements to boost new fire system water supplies, replacement of the sewerage system, and a communications upgrade which includes an improved PABX system. New warehouse facilities, roads, car parks, vehicle shelters and stormwater systems have also been included in the plan.

Construction manager Kevin Anderson described the project as “a very big plus for RAAF Base Edinburgh” with most of the new facilities replacing structures dating back to the 1940s and ’50s.

“Although this project is under a tight schedule because of the large scale of the buildings involved, the works have progressed smoothly,” he said.

Stage 1 began in June and is expected to be completed by July 2003. Stage 2 will begin in 2003 and will upgrade and replace housing and administration areas.
