VISITS to the FBI in Quantico Virginia and the Air Force Security Forces Centre at Lacklan Air Force Base, Texas, await the Air Force’s 2002 Prince of Wales Award winner.

Flight Lieutenant Mick Corlett received the award at a ceremony in Adelaide on October 14.

The Ground Defence Officer, attached to HQ Airfield Defence Wing RAAF Base Amberley, is one of six ADF recipients of the Prince of Wales Awards that recognise Reservist excellence in both the military and civilian workplace.

The Queensland Police Officer, who works with the Specialist Services Branch, was surprised at the high level of participant proposals.

“It is fantastic to win. Point scoring must have been a very close race though as all candidates had really good projects – they could have picked anyone,” he said.

Each award allows the recipient to undertake a two-week placement with a civilian employer and a two-week training attachment to a military unit.

FLTLT Corlett will travel to the US next year and visit the FBI and the Air Force Security Forces Centre.

The centre implements force protection security and law enforcement policies and programs for the US Air Force worldwide. Programs managed by the Air Force Security Forces Centre include anti-terrorism/force protection, air base ground defence, firearms training and vulnerability assessments.

Wing Commander Sheldon Kimber, Officer Commanding Airfield Defence Wing, said winning the award was appropriate recognition of FLTLT Corlett’s valuable contribution to the Wing, and a worthy reflection of the capacity for Ground Defence to meet force protection requirements for the Air Force.

“FLTLT Corlett is a highly regarded officer who is a very valuable asset to the Wing – he will be an excellent ambassador for the Reserves, the Air Force and Australia in general,” he said.

The awards were established in 1984 to promote community and business support for the ADF Reserves, with selected Reservists travelling to the US, Canada or the UK to train with their military and civilian counterparts.

The scheme provides training for Reservists that enhances individual experience and knowledge in their fields of civilian occupation, broadens their military skills and promotes cooperation between national defence forces.

The Defence Reserves Support Council manages the scheme and Reserve members, ranked from Sergeant to Squadron Leader are encouraged to apply for the award.
