THE
ADFA Guards Inline Hockey Club made it back-to-back premierships,
crushing the top-placed Gators 12-1 in the recent ACT Inline Hockey
grand final.
After a slow start to the season, the defending title holders gained
momentum as the finals approached and put together a near-perfect
game when it counted to record one of the most convincing wins of
the season.
Club president Air Force Officer Cadet Nathan Kirby attributed the
grand final victory to the high level of commitment displayed by
club members throughout the season.
He said the result was a reflection of both the individual skills
of the players and the cohesion of the team as a whole.
This was highlighted by the fact that all eight players managed
to get their names on the score sheet in the decider.
Guards goalkeeper Sam Fairall-Lee offered excellent support in front
of the net, boasting a 94 per cent goal stop rate.
Club captain Officer Cadet Eric Bettanin said one of the best things
about being part of a successful tri-service team was the way in
which the players put aside service rivalry for 44 minutes every
week to compete as one in the ACT's top competition.
However, he expects that rivalry to resurface next year when the
team is broken up for the ADF National Inline Hockey Tournament.
The three service teams will play a combination of six games over
one weekend to decide who will be included in the 2003 Defence Inline
Hockey team.
Inline Hockey players who have not yet registered their interest
in being part of the ADF national team should e-mail OFFCDT Nathan
Kirby at n.kirby@student.adfa.edu.au
with their details for the chance to be incorporated into the 2003
Service teams.
