IF you are a keen snapper, here’s your chance to show the ADF what you are capable of with a camera in your hand.

The Service newspapers are looking for Defence’s best amateur photographers through their inaugural ADF Amateur Photography Competition. The rules are simple:
  • The competition is open to all members of the ADF, excluding members whose trade, rating, or ECN is as a photographer.
  • Photographs must depict an aspect of life in the ADF.
  • There are four categories: best photo, best black and white photo; best digitally created photo; and best sports-adventurous training photo.

Significant prizes are to be confirmed and will be announced later.

There is also a special award, the Harry Burton Memorial Award. This award is to honour the memory of Australian cameraman and journalist Harry Burton, killed in Afghanistan on November 19, 2001. The winner will be selected by his family.

CDF General Peter Cosgrove suggested the award be named after Burton, who he had met during INTERFET. He said Harry had been a compassionate person who had gained much respect from ADF personnel in East Timor.

Harry’s father, Harry Burton snr, said the family was deeply touched by the naming of the award.
