ORDER
OF THE DAY
TO THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF
OPERATION RELEX
To the men and women of the Australian Defence Force. We have
marked the first anniversary of Operation RELEX an operation
that commenced on 3 September 2001 and continues to provide enhanced
ADF support to the civil authorities in protection of our nations
borders. It is appropriate and timely that we recognise the continuing
outstanding efforts of all those involved in delivering this successful
operation.
Operation RELEX was established to support a whole-of government
approach to address the greatly increased numbers of unauthorised
arrivals arriving by sea on to Australian territory in our north.
From the outset, the ADFs enhanced contribution to Australias
border protection operations required a timely and innovative
response and exceptional teamwork, both within the joint team
and with our civil counterparts.
In delivering Operation RELEX, under the Maritime Commanders
command, our people have been called upon to operate in a militarily
unconventional and very challenging operational environment. At
one time or another, most of our Navys warships and many
of its aircrew, hundreds of soldiers and our Air Forces
aircrew and air defence guards have all participated in this important
operation. The sailors, soldiers and airmen afloat and airborne,
at all hours of the day and night, frequently in difficult weather
conditions, have remained vigilant and have delivered a highly
successful outcome for the ADF and Australia. I am impressed with
the continued commitment, discipline and professionalism displayed
by all those who support and execute the operation. They are a
great credit to their respective Services and to the ADF.
Operation RELEX is a challenging and legitimate mission and one
that demands much of us and those who support us. I remain convinced
of our ability to continue to deliver high quality operations
now and in the future. My confidence stems from a steadfast belief
in the ADF and the contributions that each of you make to it.
In closing, I remain confident that you will continue doing what
you do best serving the nation and its interests.
