MAPS,
charts and other navigational aids are being increasingly affected
by advances in digital technology.
Outdated hard copy navigational tools are being replaced by technology
requiring updates to existing Air Force instructions.
Defence Instruction (Air Force) DI(AF) OPS 1-8 Aircrew Manuals,
Aircrew Publications and Aeronautical Information Documents was
recently reviewed and found to be inadequate concerning aeronautical
information services.
Aeronautical information (AI) is an essential element in the support
of ADF flight operations and may be required in hard copy or soft
copy formats.
Wing Commander Ray Borysewicz, Head of Air Force Aeronautical
Information Services, said the demand for AI services had expanded
beyond the traditional range of hard copy products.
Digital aeronautical information is becoming increasingly
crucial to the airborne functioning capacity of the ADF
consequently, OPS 18 is undergoing a complete re-write,
he said.
The RAAF Aeronautical Information Service provides AI for the
ADF as a production agency of Air Force Headquarters.
The agency is currently developing a strategic plan to guide capability
development for the provision of AI services to the ADF over the
next 5-10 years.
The plan will take into account technology advances and development
occurring in the industry.
