Base
to open for inspection
RAAF
Base Edinburgh, one of the Air Forces largest bases and home
to the nations maritime patrol aircraft the P-3C Orion
will hold an Open Day on Sunday, October 20, from 8.30am.
The Open Day is the first in a five-year program of activities at
the Air Forces major bases.
In the past the Air Force held regular air shows, but these have
not been held for several years.
The popularity of open days and the need for the Defence Force to
demonstrate its skills has resulted in Edinburgh opening its gates
to the general public.
Head Special Events Team Air Commodore Des Long said the theme for
the Open Day would be Defence and the Community.
AIRCDRE Long said the event would feature a modest flying program,
supplemented by displays from Air Force, Navy, Army and the Defence
Science and Technology Organisation.
Community organisations and local industry will also highlight their
role in the Defence community.
About 2000 uniformed and civilian personnel support the many functions
performed at the base.
Units at Edinburgh include the Maritime Patrol Group, Aircraft Research
and Development Unit, No. 1 Recruit Training Unit, No. 1 Radar Surveillance
Unit (the Jindalee Operational Radar Network Headquarters), the
Institute of Aviation Medicine, Maritime Patrol System Program Office
(MPSPO), Joint Logistic Unit - South, No. 1 Airfield Defence Squadron,
No. 44 Wing (Air Traffic Control), No. 24 Squadron (Reserves), the
