Masters of Touch Football

AN over 50s men’s team representing the Australian Defence Force Touch Association (ADFTA) Defence Warriors is set to play at the World Masters Games in Melbourne.

The tournament will be conducted at Albert Park Reserve from October 8-12.

Team spokesman Warrant Officer 1 Greg Chamberlain said the Warriors were confident of success as the team is based on a strong nucleus of Defence players who have represented the ADFTA at National Touch League level.

Chamberlain has also imported a few civilian players from his local Lismore area into the team, including former Australian rugby league halfback Johnny Mayes.

As well as being an excellent tournament, participation in the World Masters Games also provides ADFTA’s oldest team an early start to their preparation for the National Touch League Seniors Championships in March next year.

Team manager Squadron Leader Cliff Winnett has spent the last few months completing administrative tasks while others such as Warrant Officer 1 Reg Jones and Warrant Officer 2 Norm Thirkell have been busy chasing sponsorship to assist the group to enjoy a successful tournament.
