THE
Air Force mens basketball team bounded away with back-to-back
wins at the NSW Interservice Championships at Randwick Barracks
from August 28-30.
The mens team lost only its final match of the tournament
to retain the VSG Browning Trophy ahead of the NSW Army and Navy
teams.
In a two-way battle for the womens title, the Air Force women
could not overcome the Navy side. Air Force scored a 10-point win
in the opening encounter, only for the Navy women to bounce back
with two convincing victories.
The Air Force men, however, opened their campaign with a four-point
victory against Army after leading by 13 points at half-time.
Ken Robertson top scored with a game-high 17 points, followed by
Ben Angliss with 16, Nicky Parker 15 and Darren Martin 14.
Air Force continued to fly in the next game against Navy with a
12-point win. Ken Robertson again top scored with 23 points.
On day three Air Force played its final two games, opening with
a 16-point victory against Navy that effectively won it the title.
The final return game against Army then became a battle of attrition
with Army exercising its fresh legs and stretching a 17-point half-time
lead to 25 points at the final whistle.
The ADF Combined Services Basketball Championships will be held
at Wagga from November 8-16 in a state against state format.
Air Force players to make the NSW Combined Services side were: Leading
Aircraftman Andy Peate, Leading Aircraftman Aaron Hampshire, Corporal
Ken Robertson, Leading Aircraftman Darren Martin, Leading Aircraftman
Nicky Parker and Leading Aircraftman Ben Hughes.
