THE Air Force was crowned the overall winner of the ACT Interservice Touch
Competition after an impressive showing at RMC Duntroon touch fields on
August 2.
Air Force teams dominated the competition, winning the men's open and mixed
divisions outright and teaming with the Army to triumph in the women's open
section.
In the men's over 35s, Air Force finished runners-up to Navy.
This year's competition attracted more than 80 male and female players from
the Air Force, Army, Navy and Australian Federal Police.
The weather gods smiled on organisers, with bright sunshine and mild temperatures
creating ideal conditions for touch football.
The carnival took the form of a round-robin competition, with teams playing
games back-to-back throughout the day and the winner decided on an overall
points system.
The men's open competition proved to be of high quality and fiercely contested,
with the Air Force pipping Navy for the title.
The women's open competition was just as fierce, and it was the first time
for some years that there were sufficient numbers to create a competitive
draw.
Air Force and Army women combined to beat the Navy in a series of high standard
games.
The Air Force again proved too strong in the closely fought mixed competition,
with Army finishing second, Navy third and the Australian Federal Police,
participating for the first time, finishing fourth.
Selection trials for the Australian Defence Force National Touch Titles
will be held later this month.
