Victim honoured

August 15, 2002

THE Air Force has honoured an Australian man killed in the September 11 terrorism attacks in New York.

Defence Minister Robert Hill unveiled the "surf club", a new recreation deck at Ganci Air Base in Kyrgyzstan named in honour of Peter Gyulavary, who died in the collapse of the World Trade Centre towers. Mr Gyulavary had an association with a surf lifesaving club in Australia.

The Commander of the Air Force Detachment in Kyrgyzstan, Squadron Leader Trenton Breeze, said the naming of the recreation deck meant a lot to the detachment. The "surf club" is a central meeting point and general recreation area for Air Force personnel at the base.
