AIR Power projection capability will be enhanced by a new streamlined approach to electronic warfare.

The Air Force will benefit from a recent significant development with the formation of the Joint Electronic Warfare Operational Support Unit (JEWOSU).

The Air Force Electronic Warfare Squadron (EWSQN) and RAN Electronic Warfare Support Division (RANEWSD) have amalgamated to form JEWOSU.

The new joint unit is located within the Aircraft Research and Development Unit at RAAF Base Edinburgh.

Although the integration ceremony was small, the unit will have a positive impact on the ability of Australia to project air, sea and land power in defending Australia.

JEWOSU Commanding Officer Wing Commander Murray Gordon said this was an important step in the development of electronic warfare systems for the ADF.

"This reorganisation will streamline the development, testing and delivery of electronic warfare capability for aircraft and ships, resulting in significant savings in time and resources," Wing Commander Gordon said.

JEWOSU will provide electronic warfare operational support, systems advice to DMO and self-protection-focused training with electronic warfare simulator and simulator support.

Director General Policy and Plans - Air Force Air Commodore Graham Bentley signed the formalising document at DSTO Edinburgh with Commander Australian Navy Systems Command Commodore Russ Crane.

The importance of electronic warfare capability in modern conflict was highlighted on the day with all three guest speakers emphasising its vital role in the ADF.

Commodore Crane said, "This is the future, we must get this right."
