Refuellers deployed
July 4, 2002
THE second rotation of B-707 air-to-air refuelling aircraft and personnel
deployed as part of Australia's commitment to the war against terror were
farewelled at RAAF Base Richmond on June 18.
There was sense of excitement and trepidation in the air as about 70 personnel
from No. 33 Squadron were officially farewelled by Air Commander Air Vice-Marshal
John Kindler in front of a gathering of family and friends.
They will be based at Manas, Kyrgyzstan, replacing the first deployment
of personnel who left Australian shores in mid-March.
The B-707s' contribution is an important part of Australia's commitment
to the international coalition against terrorism.
The B-707s are fitted to refuel two aircraft simultaneously and have played
a vital role in refuelling US and French aircraft.
The deployment was only made possible by the hard work and determination
of many members of the Air Force both at home and abroad.
