Townsville hits the road
June 6, 2002
RAAF Base Townsville members will hit the road in the name of charity in
July - and they're looking for recruits to join them.
The three-day charity bike ride, to raise money for children's cancer research,
will take riders on a scenic 350km journey along the coast of far north
Queensland from July 25-27.
Beginning at the Centenary Hotel on the morning of Thursday, July 25, the
charity ride will involve about 150 cyclists taking to the highway on the
first leg to Ingham.
On day two, participants will travel to nearby Innisfail before the final
stage, which takes them to Cairns.
About 10 Air Force riders have already signed up for this year's event,
but joint coordinator, RAAF Base Townsville's Corporal Brett Levinge has
called for more to jump into the saddle.
CPL Levinge, who completed his first charity ride last year, said participants
in this year's ride could take it seriously or simply relax and soak up
the scenery.
"It's not a race at all, it's more of a touring ride," CPL Levinge said.
He added that the bulk of the journey was a flat, easy ride and suitable
for people of all ages and abilities.
"Last year we had people as young as 15 and as old as 70 on the ride," he
said.
The riding group will be broken up into for categories to suit different
experience levels. The ultra group will cater for extremely fit and skilled
riders, the intermediate group will suit semi-experienced cyclists, while
two cruising groups will be ideal for those happy to take a more leisurely
pace.
Last year the charity ride raised $54,000 for the Children's Cancer Institute,
but this year CPL Levinge and his fellow coordinators have set a target
of $75,000.
