ESP team earns kudos

February 2002

WGCDR Stephen Hayes accepts the honour on behalf of his ESP team from Chief of Air Force, AIRMSHL Angus Houston.

The 'unstinting devotion' of the Engineer Sustainability Project team was recognised recently with a Chief of Air Force Commendation.

The team, led by Wing Commander Stephen Hayes was commended for outstanding achievement in addressing ongoing problems with the sustainability of the Aerospace Engineering Specialisation.

The Engineer Sustainability Project was formed in April 2000 and authorised to review, amongst other things, the high separation rate of aerospace engineers from the Air Force. The team identified areas of concern and directed their efforts to remuneration, career management, professional development, engineering leadership and strategic development.

Many innovative and imaginative strategies were developed and have been implemented to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the Aerospace Engineering capability.

The commendation read in part: 'The delivery of Engineer Sustainability Project strategies has created a sense of optimism and confidence for the future of officers within the engineering fraternity. To resolve such serious personnel capability issues is indeed an outstanding effort resulting in a decline of engineer separations'.

'The achievements of the Engineer Sustainability Project reflect great credit on the dedication and professionalism of the team members and the Royal Australian Air Force.'

WGCDR Hayes said the commendation was an important reflection of the Senior Leadership Team's recognition of a modern HR initiative and the importance the team places on personnel.

He praised the hard work of his dedicated team - Squadron Leader Steve Green, Warrant Officer Charmaine Rule, and Flight Sergeant Steve Rule - whose significant contribution and commitment played a big part in the project's success.

Director General Personnel - Air Force, Air Commodore Ken Birrer has said the ESP is just the beginning, with plans in the pipeline to address every mustering and category in the Air Force.
