Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Angus Houston, and Parliamentary Secretary to Minister for Defence, Dr Brendan Nelson, were joined by family and friends to farewell the F/A-18 pilots and ground crew from No. 77 Squadron deploying as part of Australia's contribution to the coalition against terrorism.

The clouds grew dark and the rain held off long enough for AIRMSHL Houston to offer words of encouragement and support to both the Squadron members deploying and their families. He emphasised his and Australia's appreciation of the commitment and dedication shown by those soon to depart.

The historical significance of the deployment was also mentioned, specifically in regards to the Squadron's efforts in the Korean War. This is the first time the Air Force has deployed fighters on war-like service since the Korean War.

With the formalities over, a slightly delayed, yet still exciting flypast by four Hornets from No. 3 Squadron was a fitting farewell to their deploying colleagues.

CAF and Dr Nelson ended the morning with a chance to chat with pilots, ground crew and their families during morning tea.

The pilots and ground crew deploying from 77SQN are part of the 250 to 300 Air Force people Australia is sending in support of the coalition against terrorism.

The Air Force commitment is centred around four F/A-18 Hornets, two P3-C Orions and two B707 air-to-air refuelling aircraft as part of its contribution to the international coalition.
