John shares his talents

November, 2001

John Maddock has combined two of his loves - sketching and aviation - to create a snapshot of Australia's past.

The former RAN Lieutenant Commander has a knack for sketching aircraft and takes this art one step further to bring his other passion, aviation history, to life.

After years spent sketching for his own enjoyment, John decided to share his talents with the world. He has created the ideal memento for aviation art enthusiasts, current and former Air Force personnel or those who simply love aircraft - a framed artwork which includes an aircraft sketch, letter or anecdote encapsulating actual events, and a period aviation advertisement, poster or squadron badge.

'It's always seemed to me that while people may enjoy aviation art, the artwork itself tells them very little about either the aircraft itself or the period in question. By providing interesting background information in addition to a sketch, I can add to their knowledge and understanding,' John explained.

'History is more than just facts; it's about people and the events they were involved in. As part of researching the aircraft I'm sketching, I undertake extensive reading about the period it belongs to.'

John takes great pleasure in weaving facts and pieces of information together to form a letter written as if from a participant in the events. 'All the events portrayed are based on fact, but in some instances, I've compressed time so that events occur over a short period or involve just one crew instead of several,' John said.

No. 77 Squadron's involvement in Korea flying Gloster Meteors is one example of John's handiwork.

John, who works in Defence's Project Management and Procurement Training (PM&PT) section, served in the RAN for more than 24 years as a sailor and officer. He joined the Service in 1969 as a Writer sailor (equivalent to RAAF Clerk) and after three years at Teachers' College in Perth, was promoted to Petty Officer Academic Instructor.

Despite his background at sea, John has long been fascinated by aircraft. John is keen to see others enjoy his aviation art and while he has favourite aircraft, would make a package on request.
