Air Force people contribute to coalition

November, 2001

A RAAF in tanker configuration. two will support air-to-air refuelling operations. They will be joined by four F/A18 Hornets supporting air defence of coalition forces. Two P3 Orion long range maritime patrol aircraft will augment coalition mairtime patrol and reconnaissance capability.
On 17 October, the Government announced the deployment of Australian Defence Force personnel to join the coalition force in the war against terrorism.

By the end of November, between 250 and 300 Air Force people will have deployed to the Middle East as part of a larger ADF contingent.

The Air Force component of that contribution to the US-led Coalition will consist of:

  • A detachment of 75 people who will operate and support two P3-C aircraft on maritime reconnaissance and patrol tasks.
  • A detachment of 100 people who will operate and support two KB-707 aircraft on air-to-air refuelling tasks.
  • A detachment of 100 people who will operate and support four F/A-18A Hornets which will provide a 24 hour a day Air Defence capability for deployed Coalition forces.

In addition to this commitment, people operating and supporting C-130 Hercules will also provide vital strategic airlift in support of the deployed forces over the coming weeks.

Air Force people in a wide range of units here in Australia will also provide essential support to ensure the deployed capability is maintained.

All up, the ADF contribution to the Coalition will involve the overseas deployment of about 1550 Defence Force personnel.

Our Government is aware of the associated demands of sustained overseas deployment, and their decision to commit Australian forces is indicative of their confidence in our ability to step up to the demands of heightened operational tempo.

I am extremely confident that those Air Force personnel who deploy, and those who support that deployment, will serve with pride and dedication. They will enhance our reputation for professionalism and operational effectiveness. Our important relationship with the US and other Coalition nations will also be strengthened.

As members of a Coalition there will be a need to build harmonious relationships in both operational and support areas. Teamwork across national boundaries will be essential to achieve operational success.

I urge them to follow in the footsteps of previous Air Force people who have deployed overseas on operational service. Like them they should demonstrate our enduring Air Force Values by striving for excellence as both leaders and followers, and to seek to be recognised for their loyalty, integrity and courage.

Every member of the Air Force, both permanent and reserve, is contributing to this important commitment to the Coalition against terrorism. Look to each other for support. Our greatest asset in times of uncertainty is the trust that we have in each other as members of a team. We who remain in Australia will provide you and your families with dedicated support.

In conclusion, I wish all members of the ADF deployment success and a safe return. I know that all of you will continue the tradition of service for which we are renowned.

Our friends and colleagues are being sent because they are fully prepared to perform the task. They are professional, dedicated and well trained for exactly the roles being asked of them.

Let us not forget why we are involved and what the aims and goals of this operation are.

This operation represents a united stance against terrorism and the willingness and resolve of Australia and other nations with similar values to safeguard global peace and stability for our generation and future generations.

My thoughts are with all of you, your families and loved ones.
