Donations to the RAAF Memorial Trust Fund have now exceeded $400,000. The
major contributor last month was Northrop Grumman, who provided two separate
donations of US$5,000 each; one from Northrop Grumman Corporation and the
other from Northrop Grumman Electronic Sensors & Systems Sector. The RAAF
Memorial Redevelopment Committee has gratefully accepted these and the other
personal donations, which continue to be received each week.
The project has now progressed to the Design Development Phase. This phase
involves the selection and commissioning of an artist to prepare the drawings
of the images to be etched into the black granite wall and the appointment
of an architect to undertake detailed design development. The Design Development
Phase will run over the next several months and involve the expenditure
of up to $101,000.
One disappointing aspect of the fundraising campaign, however, has been
the lack of support to date from current serving RAAF members. Discussions
with members from outside Canberra reveal that many are not even aware that
there is a National Memorial to the RAAF or of its significance.
While the Memorial is intended to symbolise the spirit of the RAAF and serve
as a tribute to the fallen, it also recognises all those men and women who
have served in the RAAF since its formation in 1921, and all those who will
do so in the future.
It has direct relevance, therefore, to all RAAF members. So why not take
up a collection in your unit and support 'your' memorial and contribute
to 'your' heritage? Brochures and donation forms should be available at
all unit orderly rooms and Corporate Support shopfronts. You can send one
consolidated cheque for all the money raised, along with a list of the names
of the donors and the amounts given by each, and the Redevelopment Committee
will send individual receipts back to those so entitled (i.e. those who
donate $2 or more).
As at 9 July 2001, donations to the RAAF Memorial Trust Fund totaled $409,000.00.
While this represents a significant proportion of the money required, we
still need to raise about another $100,000 to reach our target of over $500,000.
The RAAF Memorial Redevelopment Committee, therefore, asks that you give
serious consideration to making a contribution if you have not already done
so. The Committee also seeks your active support to help publicise the project
and encourage donations from others, using any contacts and networks that
you may have.
