Each year, one Airman or Airwoman at RAAF Base Edinburgh is recognised for their outstanding performance both in their primary role and in promoting the Air Force to the wider community.

This year's award winner - Corporal Shaun Howard (pictured) from 1RTU - is a deserving recipient of the accolade.

CPL Howard joined the RAAF Active Reserve in 1994 as a General Hand and later underwent General Service Instructor (GSI) training in 1988. (GSI training is now termed Military Skills Instructor (MSI) training.)

Since then he has been employed as a full-time Reservist at 1RTU. CPL Howard has been engaged in a wide variety of Unit duties over the past three years and has excelled in every task.

Recently, due to manning shortfalls, CPL Howard was given the opportunity to perform at SNCO level as the sergeant in charge of Examination and Assessment Section where he cemented the respect of peers and superiors alike.

Given the long hours and arduous conditions MSIs continuously work under, all this probably seems sufficient grounds for the award, but it was CPL Howard's commitment to the local community that really clinched his nomination.

CPL Howard is actively involved in community programs for disadvantaged youths that provide young people with support and a positive role model. He is also actively involved with the local Police Cadet program and continuously seeks to forge ties between Defence and the local community.

CPL Howard attacks all these tasks with the highest level of professionalism and dedication and he is a worthy winner of the 2001 467/463SQN RAAF Base Edinburgh Airman/Airwoman of the year award.
