Saying thanks

May, 2001

The efforts of 322CSS Fire Section personnel at RAAF Tindal were recognised in February with the presentation of an Officer Commanding commendation and a number of Commanding Officer commendations.

At the presentation ceremony were OC TDL GPCAPT John Kennedy, CO 322CSS WGCDR Mark Simpson, OICOSF SQNLDR Steve Lampard and WOD WOFF Robert Eley. The presentations were made at the Tindal Fire Section with a number of fire staff family members in attendance.

LAC Jason Collins (FIREFTR) received an OC's commendation for his work in raising the profile of the Fire Section and RAAF Tindal with regular Fire Safety articles in the locally produced Tindal Times magazine. He has also produced a Fire Safety welcome booklet to raise the fire and safety awareness of RAAF families in their homes.

CPL Owen Johnson (FIREFTR) and CPL Stephen Johnstone (SFC) both received CO commendations for command presence and initiative during a wildfire on 17 July 2000, which was out of control on the southern side of the base, and was threatening base assets. The wildfire affected more than 12 square kilometres of natural bushland, with a number of dangerous situations developing throughout the day. Both members exhibited high levels of communication combined with quick and decisive actions to nullify the threat to RAAF assets. Fire Crews and volunteer Base Combatant Personnel (BCP) of all ranks were easily and effectively controlled, ensuring that all activities were completed in total safety.

SGT Andrew Saveliev (AFC) received a CO's commendation for excellent command presence whilst controlling a number of fire fighting crews and vehicles during a wildfire that threatened the northern side of RAAF Tindal on 26 September 2000. The wildfire situation was further complicated due to suspected arsonist activities in the area. SGT Saveliev's control of the situation prevented certain damage to RAAF assets and on base married quarters.
