Call for volunteers

April, 2001

Joining Australia's Federation Guard is an opportunity to not only represent the ADF, but Australia, according to Executive Officer of the Guard's Air Force Division, Flight Lieutenant Ewen Seabrook.

FLTLT Seabrook has encouraged RAAF personnel to consider volunteering for the Guard. 'We are always looking for volunteers,' he said.

Volunteers are posted to the Guard in Canberra on a two-year rotation. However, some members have requested to stay an extra year.

'The Guard gives people the opportunity to do things perhaps they would never do, such as parade on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace in front of 15,000 people - not many RAAFies have done that,' FLTLT Seabrook said. 'And being part of a Guard going to Gallipoli for ANZAC Day is a great honour.'

FLTLT Seabrook added that being part of the Guard was a good opportunity to learn about the other Services, take part in PT as part of your job and work regular hours.

To become a member of the Guard you must be physically fit.

About the Federation Guard

  • Australia's Federation Guard, a tri-Service unit, was formed in January 2000 and comprises about 150 members, including 49 Air Force representatives.
  • While the Guard was formed specifically for ceremonial duties for the Centenary of Federation, its role has been extended to provide a standing, tri-Service ceremonial guard for the Australian Defence Force. This includes the welcoming of dignitaries for other occasions.
  • This is the first and only, permanent ceremonial unit in the Australian Defence Force.
  • Although initially formed for two years, 2000-2001, the Federation Guard's tenure has been extended.
