Redevelopment of the RAAF Memorial The RAAF Memorial Trust Fund Needs Your Help

March, 2001

An artist's impression of how the RAAF Memorial, located on ANZAC Parade in Canberra, could look after redevelopment

It is 'our' Memorial. If we do not support it, we can hardly expect the general public, defence companies and other corporations to donate money towards its redevelopment.

As was reported in the December edition of Air Force News, Air Marshal Errol McCormack, Chief of Air Force, has instituted a project to have the National Memorial to the RAAF redeveloped to make it more identifiable and to ensure that it portrays more fully the history of the Service. Current plans are to have the required work completed by September 2001, during the RAAF's 80th anniversary year.

The Memorial is intended to symbolise not only the spirit of the RAAF but also service to Australia and the sacrifice made by tens of thousands of Air Force men and women since the formation of the RAAF in March 1921. However, for some years now, many people have commented that the existing monument is not readily identifiable as the 'Air Force' National Memorial. Other comment has been that the newer monuments on Anzac Parade tend to be more illustrative and go further in telling a story.
