HDPE spends Christmas in Bougainville

February, 2001

When in Bougainville over Christmas, Major-General Simon Willis praised the work carried out by members of the Peace Monitoring Group on the island.
Recognising the significant work carried out by the Peace Monitoring Group (PMG) in Bougainville, Major-General Simon Willis, Head Defence Personnel Executive, spent Christmas with the ADF and civilian monitors currently posted to the island.

Visiting the teamsites at Buka, Wakunai, Tonu, Buin and Arawa, and also spending time with the Logistic Support Team at Loloho and HQ-PMG, Major-General Willis joined in with Christmas celebrations and found time to speak individually with many members of the PMG.

'I commend your achievements and praise the progress you have made towards maintaining peace,' said Maj-Gen Willis when addressing tri-Service and civilian personnel assembled for Christmas lunch at Loloho.

'While separated from your families and friends this Christmas be aware that your Service is valued, not only by the leaders of Defence, but also by the Australian public and particularly the people of Bougainville as you continue your work in facilitating lasting peace,' he said.

Taking time to listen to people on-the-ground enabled Major-General Willis to hear about the recent achievements and activities of OP BEL ISI. He expressed praise for the high level of morale and strong team performance of OP BEL ISI and wished all members a rewarding conclusion to their deployment and enjoyable reunion with families in the new year.
