IT’S been football fever across the base at Edinburgh with lunchtime activity at an all-time high.

Five-a-side soccer has become the most popular lunchtime sport on base, with 20 teams competing in both A and B grades.

This season’s A-Grade final was won by the Mulisha Allstars in a close game against the DSTO Allstars, 5 goals 3.

Goalkickers for Mulisha were Mick Krolig (2), and Brad Moore, Peter Brown and Scott Hansen.

For the DSTO Allstars, Peter Smet put two into the net while Damien Lietsch contributed one.

In the B grade, Jindaroos defeated Foo Fighters 3 nil. Andrew Mazzarollo starred with 2 while Dom Signiorello added another to the scoreline.

The Golden Boot awards went to the players in each grade who scored the most goals for the season.

Mick Krollig took the A-grade Golden Boot with 64 goals, 54 of those from just 15 appearances. Dom Signiorello took the B-grade award with 29 goals for the season, after bumping out Wedgies’ Mark Elbrow.

Almost 300 players from the Edinburgh defence community competed, with 10 games played each week for the Defcredit trophy.

Mulisha was the standout A-grade side throughout the season, the inclusion of Luke Thomas in their team a boost to their firepower.

Thomas is known throughout the Edinburgh 5-a-side as one of the most successful players in the competition’s history after winning multiple titles with Inter Real and Splitters.

Strong competition in A grade came from runners up, DSTO Allstars, and the only remaining foundation club of the competition, The Flying Erics.

Jindaroos, expected to be promoted to A Grade, led the B grade from Foo Fighters, RLM Systems, Packers, Nova Aerospace and Tenix sides.

A number of players from the lunchtime competition also represented South Australia in Air Force teams as well as making national Service teams.

Players included Mick Krollig, Paul Bonnar, Wayne Orchard, Brad Moore, Steve Brightwell, Luke Thomas, Bryan Little, Adam Driscoll, Stu Paton and of Geoff Gillard.

DSTO personnel and other defence civilians had a strong presence at all levels with notable contribution from Peter Smet, Richard Price, Ralph Sienecke, Arthur Provotas, Kev Pullen, James Verbinycz, Simon Brjkle, Dom Signorello and Mark Elbrow.

The next competition starts at the end of July and new teams are welcome, though places are limited.
