What do you do in your job?
We are the systems specialists on board the aircraft and therefore we provide engineering advice to the crew, monitor all flight systems and complete the loading and performance of the aircraft.

What are the biggest perks of your job?
I think the biggest perk of my job is that we get to fly, as well as see the world.

What’s it like to work as part of a crew?
It is like a second family. We all get along and work as a team. When we are on task, every member knows their job and it is satisfying to see when we get a hit on a submarine or a war ship.

What’s the best flying job you’ve been on?
Doing operational flying in the MEAO, seeing your work have some real time effect.

Do you ever get sick of flying?
I don’t think I will ever get sick of flying as it is so dynamic; every day is so different. One day you’re in Adelaide, the next you may be in Hawaii, Malaysia, Singapore etc.

Do you have one of the best views from your seat in the cockpit?
It is no rumour that the FLTENG seat is the best in the aircraft, but it upsets the pilots to hear as they like theirs. Seriously, it is a great seat, because you get a good 180º view.

For information on becoming a FLTENG, look on the People Central web site under Career Progression/ Job Descriptions, or contact:
WOFF David Thackray, senior FLTENG instructor at No. 292 Squadron, on (08) 8393 4239 or david.thackray@defence.gov.au; or
WOFF David Strauss, airmen aircrew manager from Survellience Response Group, on (08) 8393 4143 or david.strauss@defence.gov.au.

To be eligible for remuster to FLTENG, applicants must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in an aircraft technical mustering.

This is a regular series about jobs for airmen, airwomen and officers in the Air Force.

If there’s a job you’d like profiled or you’re willing to be profiled, please email CPL Simone Liebelt at simone.liebelt@defence.gov.au or call her on (02) 6266 7613.
