NO. 92 Wing operated their aircraft for Exercise Ocean Protector from RAAF Base Edinburgh, a decision the wing’s OC said provided valuable training.

“The decision to operate the aircraft from RAAF Edinburgh instead of deploying to an east coast base provided many benefits to 92WG, not least of which was improved support facilities, and as a result, enhanced flexibility to support the exercise,” Group Captain Warren Ludwig said.

The wing’s objectives were to provide a realistic air environment in support of maritime operations, practise command, control and communication procedures within a joint/combined activity and practise maritime warfare skills.

“The exercise proved to be a good opportunity to work with the RAN and NZDF assets and the vast majority of our training goals were achieved,” GPCAPT Ludwig said.

“Our support areas are working very hard at the moment with the current operational tempo and given this, performed quite well... Operations performed well overall, and the inclusion of web-based operations planning enabled greater access to information for mission crews before the sortie, and was a welcome innovation for the participating crews.”

GPCAPT Ludwig said the tasking from the Air Operations Centre also worked well.

“It enabled crews to train exactly as they were required to operate in real environments, while having the assurance that air serials were deconflicted.” He said the aircraft performed very well and 92WG’s confidence and proficiency in the AP-3C has continued to build.
