GLADIATORIAL cunning and expertise held sway at RAAF Base Williams, Laverton, when Combat Support Unit Williams PTIs and a local boxing and kick-boxing club held a fight night and raised $500 for Camp Quality.

The RAAF Williams’ gymnasium was transformed into a fight club, complete with boxing ring, audio-visual and interfight entertainment, for the event on October 15.

Twelve fighters participated – though there were no official winners – and the showcase fight brought former Australian cruiserweight boxing champion Adrian Bellin out of retirement to spar up-and-coming fighter Johnny Walker.

Between bouts, the PTIs conducted “feats of strength” competitions, such as a jerry can raise and medball throw.

Corporal Wes Rampling, who organised the event, said the PTIs wanted to raise money for charity and to provide a social opportunity with the locals. It was also a good chance to foster esprit de corps and morale for all ranks while enjoying a great night of entertainment.

Flight Lieutenant Anthony Clarke, of Headquarters Training Command, said the boxing was hard-hitting, action-packed and a good showcase of new talent.

“After doing boxercise classes with the PTIs and then watching some live action, I have a new-found appreciation for what these guys go through in training and in competition,” he said.

“Good on them for getting behind the charities and well done to all concerned in organising the event.”

Boxing trainer Dave Hegarty said he was looking to negotiate an annual event.
