AN
airfield engineering team from No. 1 Combat Logistics Squadron
has constructed an air movements terminal and an accommodation
facility at RAAF Base Learmonth.
The construction team combined personnel from the 1CLS detachments
at Richmond, Tindal and Townsville and included an airfield engineer,
works supervisor, four carpenters, four plumbers, four plant operators,
two electricians, a general fitter and a cook.
Late last year a convoy of heavy and medium vehicles transported
the required resources from Townsville to Learmonth – a distance
of 5000km – in eight days.
Two Insulated Tropical Shed Accommodation buildings (commonly
referred to as ITSAs) were used for the air movements terminal
and the accommodation facility.
The airfield engineering team was also responsible for the internal
fit out, laying communication cable pipes for Defence Restricted
Network cables, fire engineering and associated plant, electrical
and plumbing works.
The construction work took five weeks. The air movements terminal
consists of a single office, briefing room, air movements section
and passenger lounge.
External works include concrete footpaths, fencing, and a concrete
slab for loading and unloading of luggage.
The accommodation facility consists of four bedrooms, open plan
meals and living area, kitchen and bathroom.
The project has again demonstrated 1CLS’s professional and dedicated
approach to delivering airfield engineering initiatives for the
Headquarters Combat Support Group Project Cell.
1CLS also sent many ITSA buildings to the Solomon Islands as accommodation
for personnel deployed on Operation Anode.
