College’s new badge

he ACSC’s official badge.
The ACSC’s official badge.
Governor-General Peter Hollingworth has approved a tri-service unit badge for the Australian Command and Staff College (ACSC) at Weston Creek in the ACT.

It is believed to be the first tri-service unit badge endorsed by a governor-general for the ADF.

The badge design was initiated in 2001 by Air Commodore Peter McDermott, Commandant of ACSC.

The design uses elements from the badges of the three single-service command and staff colleges. Both the Air Force Staff College and the Army Command and Staff College used an owl in their badges, though the Army’s badge depicting the Australian Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua), has been retained as the central motif for the new college.

Three vertical panels of navy blue, red and light blue on the badge’s background represent the Navy, Army and Air Force components of the college.

The original artwork, depicting Ninox strenua in flight, was produced by Krystii Melaine, of Gunning, New South Wales, who has also painted portraits of Air Marshal Sir Richard Williams and Admiral Sir Anthony Synnot for ACSC.

The Heraldry and Genealogy Society of the ACT reviewed the design to ensure that heraldic guidelines were followed.
