A four-man
team from RAAF Base Edinburghs No. 92 Wing has walked 100km
through some of South Australias most difficult terrain to
raise money for Oxfam.
Flight Lieutenant Brett Morton, Flying Officer Troy Hudson, Warrant
Officer Paul Mansell and Michael Coulson competed in the Oxfam Trailwalker
Adelaide endurance event, which challenges people to walk 100km
within 48 hours.
This years course began at the base of Mt Lofty, south of
Adelaide and finished at McLaren Vale, mostly following the Heysen
Trail.
The Air Force team, which raised $1000, finished the event in 31
hours and 21 minutes. The members were happy with the result, especially
as it was the first time they had competed in the event.
WOFF Mansell said completing the walk was one of the most difficult
things he had ever done.
It was pretty hard going a lot of the time, but we just kept
thinking positively, he said.
The team walked from 9am until midnight on the first day of the
event, before having a nap and starting all over again.
During the last 20km or so we decided to walk for four or
five kilometres and then have a rest, WOFF Mansell said.
We really saw it as a challenge, a way to get fitter and,
of course, a way to raise money for a good cause.
For the record, the winning team, The Trail Vets, completed the
walk in a time of 13:34 hours.
The Air Force team received sponsorship from Thales Underwater Systems.
