25 Squadron and No. 1 Airfield Defence Squadron were the Air Force
Reserve contributors to a recent Reserve Forces Open Day at Irwin
Barracks, Karrakatta, Western Australia.
No. 2 Flying Training School, No. 35 Squadron and Combat Support
Unit Pearce also supported the open day.
For the first time in Karrakattas history a military jet was
on static display after Macchi jet trainer A7-041 was transferred
from RAAF Base Pearce at Bullsbrook to Irwin Barracks.
Flight Lieutenant David Mustard and his Recruiting Flight personnel
staffed two tents in which were displayed a Macchi ejection seat,
tail fin and rudder assembly painted in No. 24 Squadron colours,
and a life raft and mannequin, dressed in a jet pilots flying
clothing, from No. 79 Squadron.
A Caribou aircraft from 35SQN provided the launch platform for parachuting
displays by the Red Berets.
Sergeant Darren Shorter and his team from the Military Working Dog
Section of CSUPEA provided displays of the skills of the German
shepherds and their handlers.
A four-ship formation of PC9 aircraft from 2FTS, flown by Flight
Lieutenants Grant Fichera, Mitch Roggenkamp and Grant Christensen,
along with RAF exchange pilot Squadron Leader John Clark, provided
a flying display.
Next to the 25SQN area, Squadron Leader Tim Hurford provided the
1AFDS display of tents, weapons, vehicles, motor bikes and a diorama.
Throughout the day a stream of visitors passed through the Air Force
Reserve display area.
