Reservists from No. 27 Squadron in Townsville have collaborated
with Army Aviation to airlift communications equipment into a remote
site.
The conditions ranged from hot, dusty and dry to humid and tropical
on the highest peak of a mountain range.
27SQN requested the assistance of the 5th Aviation Regiment to airlift
the equipment, needed to support a Combat Survival Training School
course.
An Army Blackhawk was required to land in a quarry under difficult
conditions, fly up to the top of a 2600ft mountain range and then
manoeuvre into a tight clearing surrounded by trees with the load
suspended 50ft below the helicopter.
Flight Lieutenant Robert Palmer, Officer in Charge of the exercise,
said that the Reservists gained valuable experience in working with
helicopters and greatly appreciated the role that 5AVN played in
supervising the ground crews and airlifting the equipment.
The task provided a good opportunity to promote good relations within
the defence forces.
