AIR FORCE takes off Thursday Nov 21 at 2200 on your ABC.
Explaining in detail the challenges the Royal Australian Air Force will face in the next 40 years is a mammoth subject, but one which is tackled courageously by a new five-part documentary series on the ABC.

True Stories: Air Force begins on Thursday, November 21, at 10pm on ABC TV.

Essentially the series poses the question “What is the future of human conflict?” and in doing so goes behind the scenes to explore the issues facing the Air Force.

Episode one deals with “The billion dollar question” and explains how “Australia’s Air Force is struggling with the biggest dilemma in its history – guessing what the future of human conflict will entail.

Filmed about two years ago, well before the Air Force’s involvement in programs such as the Joint Strike Fighter Project were announced, the documentary poses questions which, to an extent, have already been answered.

This is even more obvious in episode two, which focuses on the Air Force’s quest to keep up with the technology of the world’s superpowers and refers to the plan to replace its 71 fighters and 33 long-range bombers.

The remaining three episodes delve into a range of other areas, including the training of pilots, future combat and weapons systems and the future of unmanned aircraft.

It’s not as current as it could be but, overall, True Stories: Air Force is an excellent series, which is particularly relevant given the recent global uncertainties.

From interviews with Air Force personnel, academics and Defence experts to action-packed footage of the Air Force in full flight, this series is essential viewing for Air Force personnel.
