Top End anglers strike it big

An Air Force angler bagged the highest individual tally at the recent Inter-Service Fishing Championships at in Darwin.

Steve Cooper’s haul of 49.8kg won him the title of Champion Angler for Air Force.

However, it was not enough to stop Army from claiming the Champion Servive honours.

More than 80 anglers competed in the event. As one of the major recreation activities in the Top End is fishing, each year many dedicated anglers gather at the Lodge of Dundee for the Inter-Service Fishing Championships, which have been hotly contested for a number of years in the Northern Territory.

The event began with safety briefings, rules and regulations. The competition ran from 8am on the Friday to midday on the Sunday.

Each night at 7pm and at 1pm on the Sunday, competitors weighed in their catch –the best five fish, with only two from each species allowed.

All results were calculated to award prizes. After many years of being the bridesmaid, the Army finally broke through this year to take out champion Service trophy with a tally of 113kg. Other awards were:
  • Champion Anglers – Steve Cooper, Air Force, 49.8kg; Mick Voss, Army, 39.7kg; Steve Wright, Navy, 8.7kg.
  • Junior Champion – Jake Harris 1kg.
  • Champion Crew – Switch ’n’ Pitch with 127.5kg crewed by Mike Early, Jason Britten, Katie Gallin and Ashley Smith.
  • Best Bag – Friday: Grant Huxtable, RDFC, 21.5kg; Saturday: Aaron Harper, Army, 29.8kg; Sunday: Col Chesworth, 15.6kg.
  • Best Shore Catch – Mark Smejlis, RTFC, 1.5kg.
  • Largest Fish – Steve Crow, RDFC, 15.8kg Cobia.
  • Mystery Fish – Steve Crow, RDFC, 15.8kg Cobia.

The Army will run next year’s event in October at the Lodge of Dundee.
