ARE
they adding something to the water at RAAF Base Williamtown?
In a happy coincidence, two members of the same unit have recently
achieved international success in their respective sports.
Corporal Michelle Sweeney recently returned from the United Kingdom
where she competed against Britain in the Australian Service Volleyball
Team.
Meanwhile, fellow supply clerk Leading Aircraftman Geoff Hanckel
is off to Mexico in November as part of the Australian team to participate
in the World Triathlon Championships.
CPL Sweeney and LAC Hanckel are key members of the warehouse support
team at Williamtown.
The team coordinates and manages supplies of vital aircraft equipment
to keep the base's Hornets and Hawks in the air and ready for action.
LAC Hanckel has only been competing in triathlons since 1998 and
great results in the Australian championships this year secured
him a place in the national team to compete in the Worlds in November.
"I'm lucky that the unit and the boss have supported me all
the way, which I really appreciate," LAC Hanckel said.
CPL Sweeney agreed that Air Force's support had allowed her the
opportunity to excel in her sport.
The national women's volleyball team finished a respectable third
when it recently competed against Royal Navy, Army, Air Force, police
and fire service teams in the Crown Services Competition in the
UK.
Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence Dana Vale congratulated
CPL Sweeney and LAC Hanckel on their sporting success.
"This is an example of the many great opportunities open to
members of the Australian Defence Force," she said.
