Equity and diversity education

ENHANCING capability through cultural awareness is the focus of a new range of Defence Equity Organisation (DEO) products.

On behalf of the Defence Personnel Executive, DEO has produced three awareness packages to educate Defence staff on different aspects of equity and diversity.

The programs are being developed online and on CD to address cultural diversity, understanding homosexuality and workplace bullying.

DEO Deputy Director of Development Wing Commander Peter Phillips said the purpose of the Cultural Diversity session was to make people aware of diversity in Australia, in the Defence workplace and in dealing with overseas forces, industry and communities.

“It highlights the individual differences that each person can bring to achieving the Defence mission and enhancing capability,” he said.

Understanding Homosexuality is an education program aimed at examining diversity in Defence.

Bullying in the Workplace provides management with a required training package to deliver to personnel according to Defence instructions.

“The Defence goal of creating a safe and inclusive workplace where all people can strive to do their best, needs to be enhanced by appropriate awareness programs,” WGCDR Phillips said.

The package is to be distributed to all Defence units and directorates.

More information on the packages can be accessed via the web on www.defence.gov.au/equity.
