AIR Force teams showed a touch of class to outplay some of the best Australian Defence Force touch football players from across South Australia in a social interservice competition held at RAAF Base Edinburgh.

In a tournament designed as a lead up to national selection trials later this year, Air Force teams came out on top against skilled and worthy opposition in both the mixed and over 30s divisions.

In the mixed competition, the Air Force side was simply too strong for the Army team, recording an 8-1 win in surprisingly warm winter conditions.

The Army’s over 30s team, made up of regular soldiers from Keswick, Warradale and Woodside Barracks, gave the Air Force’s over 30s a run for their money in the final, but couldn’t counteract the skill of their highly trained opposition.

Other teams that participated in the competition included a side from the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) and an Air Force over 35s team.

Meanwhile, Air Force touch football sides from RAAF Base Amberley have finished second in the Invitational Trophy touch competition.

Air Force took on outfits from the South Queensland Police and Darling Downs in men’s, women’s, over 30s and combined over 35/40s divisions.

The South Queensland Police recorded a clean sweep in all games to finish with 36 points, eight points ahead of runners-up Air Force.

RAAF Base Amberley then entered strong sides for an interservice competition between the Air Force and Army.
Army won the over 30s match 4-3, but Air Force gained revenge in the over 35s game, winning a very close, fast contest 5-4.

When Army took out the women’s match 4-3, it was left to the clash between the men to decide who would be interservice champions.

In a quick and skilful game, both sides were evenly matched during the opening 15 minutes as Army edged to an early 2-1 lead.

Army eventually kicked away to record a convincing 7-2 win and claim the title again.
