Learning to work together

Volume 50, No. 18, October 04, 2007

Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft forces practiced joint Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations off Western Australia in August in support of Exercise Submarine Commanders Command Course 2007 (SCC07).

The exercise trained prospective United States Navy and Royal Australian Navy submarine commanding officers and crews in ASW war fighting and weapon firing proficiency.

The exercise also aimed to enhance interoperability with USN, RAN, Royal Australian Air Force and Canadian Forces in a multi-lateral exercise environment by fostering the development of improved ASW techniques and tactics combined with assets.

Participating assets included two RAAF AP-3C Orions, two USN CTF 72 P-3Cs, a CF CP-140 Aurora, HMAS Rankin, HMAS Adelaide, HMAS Ballarat, HMAS Sirius, USS Buffalo, along with composite aircrew, maintenance and support personnel.

Exercises such as SCC07 provide essential training opportunities for AP-3C Orion crews to prepare for, conduct and sustain maritime air operations in support of Australia’s national security interests and coalition operations.

SCC07 was hosted from RAAF Base Pearce and conducted in the Western Australian exercise area airspace from August 18 to 26.

The exercise also provided the opportunity for strategic discussions between coalition forces to enhance interoperability and improve ASW techniques and tactics.
