HMAS Sydney (CMDR G.N.C Holthouse) is on deployment to North America, but before departure many of the crew had a close shave.
While at anchor in Jervis Bay about three-quarters of the ship’s company were involved in a “Shave for a Cure” event for the Leukaemia Foundation.
The event was organised by the Bosun Department to show their support for SMNBM Michael Taylor whose aunt was recently diagnosed with leukaemia.
LSCK Ben McNeil and ABCK Mathew Cunningham provided entertainment and reassurance to the 20 or so brave sailors who arrived to sacrifice their locks of hair. The night was highly successful, raising close to $1000 and boosting the morale of SMNBM Taylor, HMAS Sydney and many leukaemia sufferers.
“There is no better feeling than being a part of a crew that comes together in a time of need. Talk about Navy values,” ABBM Thomas Kelly said.
Sydney will be conducting ESSM trials at the Pacific Missile Range Facility off Hawaii as well as trials of the Sea Defender Torpedo Detection System at the Canadian Naval Underwater Testing range at Nanoose Bay near Vancouver. Sydney will also visit ports such as Esquimalt, Seattle, San Francisco and San Diego. |
