Cerberus says it’s here to stay

Volume 50, No. 18, October 04, 2007

With talk occuring over the future of HMAS Cerberus, the public will get a chance to examine the inner workings of the base on Sunday, October 21.

The occasion is the HMAS Cerberus open day, an event that occurs every two years.

Commanding Officer CAPT David Garnock has themed this year’s event HMAS Cerberus — Here to stay.

It will be a chance for Cerberus to share its strong sense of community with those who have supported the base throughout many years. There will be a strong representation at the open day from Navy, Army and Air Force, representing the tri-service nature of Cerberus.

The open day will run from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free and so are many of the informative and family friendly activities planned for the day.

These include helicopter wet winching and static line lifts, fire fighting displays, boat rides, seamanship activities, dive tank display, vintage war-bird fly-pasts, aerobatic displays, sky diving displays, kids novelty races and marching classes, Navy and Army cadet units, jumping castles and face painting, Navy steam club, local car and bike clubs displays, secondary schools band festival, Navy Band performances and ceremonial sunset. Defence Force Recruiting will also set up a display.

The day is designed to give the public the opportunity to discover why and how HMAS Cerberus is such an important part of the local and defence community; speak to Defence members about careers and showcase the men and women of Cerberus.

There will also be several food and drink outlets operating for visitors plus shady parklands available for family picnics.
